Your Google Business Profile is the most important asset for local search visibility. It controls your Local Pack ranking, your appearance on Google Maps, and the information customers see before they decide to call you. This guide covers 12 optimization steps ranked by impact. Complete all 12 and you will outrank most of your local competitors.

How long this takes: Most of these steps take 5 to 15 minutes each. The full list can be completed in under 2 hours for a business with good photos and a clear description already drafted.

The 12 Steps

1

Verify Your Profile High Impact

An unverified GBP has zero Local Pack ranking power. Go to business.google.com, claim your listing if it exists or create one, and complete the verification process. Google mails a postcard with a PIN to your business address, or some businesses qualify for instant video verification. Until you verify, nothing else in this guide matters.

2

Select the Most Specific Primary Category High Impact

Your primary category is the strongest ranking signal in your GBP. Do not choose a broad category. If you are a plumber, choose "Plumber" not "Contractor." If you are a personal injury lawyer, choose "Personal Injury Attorney" not "Lawyer." The more specific your primary category, the more precisely Google matches your listing to relevant searches.

3

Add All Relevant Secondary Categories High Impact

Secondary categories expand which searches can trigger your listing. A plumbing company can add "Drainage Service," "Water Heater Installer," and "Sewer Service" as secondary categories. Each additional relevant category creates additional ranking opportunities without diluting your primary relevance.

4

Complete Every Section of Your Profile High Impact

Google rewards completeness. Fill in every available field: business description (750 characters), hours of operation, holiday hours, phone number, website, service area, and attributes. A fully completed profile outranks a partially completed one with all else equal.

5

Write a Keyword-Rich Business Description Medium Impact

Your description does not directly rank you for specific keywords but signals relevance to Google and converts profile visitors. Include your primary service, your city, and your key differentiator in the first two sentences. Avoid keyword stuffing. Write naturally for a human reader who is deciding whether to call you.

6

Add Your Complete Service List Medium Impact

GBP allows you to list individual services with names, descriptions, and prices. Each service entry is additional content that Google indexes and uses for relevance matching. Add every service you offer. Write a 1 to 2 sentence description for each. This is especially important for service businesses where clients search for specific treatments or service types.

7

Upload High-Quality Photos Regularly High Impact

Businesses with 100+ photos get 520% more calls than those with few photos, according to Google's own data. Upload exterior shots (from street view), interior shots, team photos, before-and-after work photos, and equipment. Add new photos every month. Google tracks photo freshness as a signal of active business management.

8

Set Accurate Service Areas High Impact

For service-area businesses (plumbers, HVAC, cleaners), set your service area in GBP to include every city and neighbourhood you serve. Do not set your service area too large. Google penalizes unrealistically wide service areas. Set it to the geographic area you actually serve within a reasonable drive time.

9

Generate and Respond to Reviews Consistently High Impact

Reviews are the third most important Local Pack ranking factor. Build a system to request reviews from every satisfied customer. Create a short URL (Google provides one) and send it via text or email immediately after completing work. Respond to every review within 48 hours. Engagement signals active management to Google.

10

Post Updates at Least Twice Per Month Medium Impact

GBP posts appear on your listing and signal active business management. Post updates about new services, seasonal promotions, team news, or educational tips. Posts expire after 7 days so consistency matters. Two posts per month is the minimum to maintain freshness signals. Four per month is better.

11

Enable Messaging and Respond Quickly Medium Impact

Google tracks your response rate to messages. Businesses that respond to messages quickly get a "responds quickly" badge that improves click-through rates. Enable messaging in your GBP settings and set up notifications so you respond within an hour during business hours. Slow response rates can suppress this visibility feature.

12

Monitor the Q&A Section and Add Your Own Questions Medium Impact

The Questions and Answers section appears on your GBP listing. Anyone can add questions, and anyone can answer them. Proactively add the most common questions your customers ask and answer them accurately. Monitor for questions you have not answered. This section directly influences whether customers choose to contact you.
